Year of the Rooster 2017

If you were born in 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993, 2005 or 2017, this is your year! The ‘rooster’ is proud, confident and inquisitive.

Celebrate the Chinese zodiac Lunar New Year by making this easy ‘lucky’ red envelope, also called ‘hongbao’. They are traditionally given out with money inside during this holiday and other Chinese special occasions, and represent good fortune.

You can follow these instructions, or take the rooster design and Mandarin character and apply them to any other project you have in mind!

Tools and Materials:
  • Red bond or cover weight 8 ½” x 11” paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick

  1. Print out or copy the Year of the Rooster PDF (linked here) on to red paper
  2. Cut out envelope along outside edge
  3. Fold bottom and side flaps in and glue back on to them. Don’t glue the top! The money needs to go inside!
